Who we are....

Meet your team

Blacklion Pet Hospital is not alone the oldest vet practice in Greystones but is also one of the longest established veterinary practices in Ireland catering exclusively for companion animals. Originally founded by Noel Kelly and John Wilson in 1982 it rapidly became renowned across the country as the foremost practice of its kind with clients travelling from far and wide to avail of a standard of care almost unknown to that date.

On Noel's retirement in 2003 the reins were handed over to our senior veterinary surgeon Dr Alan Rossiter. Alan refurbished the practice at that time and fully re-equipped with the most modern of anaesthetic, surgical, dental, laboratory and diagnostic imaging equipment available.

Since then we have continued to invest in our facilities and since 2007 we are accredited by the Veterinary Council of Ireland as a "Veterinary Hospital". We were one of the first practices to achieve this standard, the highest accreditation achievable. We take great pride in continuing to offer the very best of veterinary care to all our patients and to this day we continue to have clients who travel from all over Leinster to visit us.

Our Philosophy - Compassionate Care, Modern Medicine

All our vets and nurses have their own pets they love. We would ever only want the very best for our own pets.

Our philosophy therefore is to treat all our pet-patients as if they were our own by availing of the most up-to-date advances in veterinary medicine. We will always offer you the gold-standard of care and never compromise on our advice but, where requested for financial or practical reasons, we will also offer varying options to allow you to make the final decision on what you wish to do for your pet.

Of course all our staff attend numerous continuing education courses to ensure we remain fully up to date with the wonderful advances in veterinary medicine so that we can continue to offer the standard of care befitting of Blacklion Pet Hospital's tradition and history as a centre of excellence.

There are times that we will recommend to refer your pet for specialist care - for example in the areas of orthopaedics, ophthalmology, neurology and internal medicine. To this end we maintain excellent relationships with specialist practices and will always offer referral at the earliest possible opportunity where we feel this is in the best interest of your pet.

Professional Pride and a Friendly Face

Our highly trained and committed team of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses take great pride in their work, always endeavouring to offer the very best for your pet and your family. We all love our job and every day wake up looking forward to coming into work, seeing our pet-friends in need of our care and always ensuring we are there for you when a friendly face and an arm around the shoulder is needed. We are privileged to be able to call our clients our friends and in return we hope that you will always know you can depend on us for the very best of advice, support and compassion.

Your beloved pet is a highly valued member of the family, as pet people ourselves we know and understand that. It is therefore our very great honour and pleasure that you have chosen us to care for your precious fluffy friends, our sincerest wish is that we will never let you down. We thank you for entrusting the care of your pet into our hands.

Teaching Hospital

Blacklion Pet Hospital is one of the teaching practices of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine and also for the 5 training centres for Veterinary Nurses in Ireland. This means that we have visiting veterinary and veterinary nursing students from time to time to observe and assist the practice staff. Clients will always be asked if they consent to a student to be in attendance during their visit. As well as fulfilling our obligation to train the next generation of veterinary professionals we believe that being involved in veterinary education enhances the quality of care we can provide to you.

Dr. Alan Rossiter MVB

Our senior veterinary surgeon, Alan qualified from UCD in 1997 and worked in Ireland and abroad in the UK and New Zealand, before taking over as lead vet and owner of  Blacklion Pet Hospital in 2003. Alan was the lead campaigner to ban tail docking of dogs in Ireland and to bring in mandatory microchipping of dogs. Forever supported by his wonderful wife Anna and 2 dogs Izzie and Rex and cat Skye, his days are busy with the 2 jobs he loves most - being a dad for their 4 great boys Mikey, Tom, Nicky and Peter (who all come in to 'help' in the practice) and being a vet for your wonderful pets. Alan is our orthopaedic surgeon (with a special interest in cruciate ligament surgery of the knee join) and also has a special interest in ears, skin and dentistry and is a founding member of the Irish Veterinary Dentistry Society. Alan is also a Director the the Pet Emergency Hospital in Dublin and of the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations.

Dr. Derek McGrath MVB MRCVS

Derek qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon in University College Dublin in 1984 and worked both in Ireland and the UK before joining Rhone Poulenc Animal Health (later known as Merial Animal Health) where he held positions in technical services and marketing, before taking up the post of Country Manager for the Merial business in Ireland.

Having played for Ireland as a rugby international, sport has played a major part in Derek’s career: As the first CEO of the ERC Derek spent 15 years successfully setting up and running the Heineken Cup. More recently as CEO of the Curragh Derek oversaw and delivered the redevelopment of the famous racecourse  into one of Ireland’s most prestigious infrastructural sports projects.
