About Us

Who we are

Our Philosophy - Compassionate Care, Modern Medicine

Blacklion Pet Hospital is not alone the oldest vet practice in Greystones but is also one of the longest established veterinary practices in Ireland catering exclusively for companion animals.

Originally founded by Noel Kelly and John Wilson in 1982 it rapidly became renowned across the country as the foremost practice of its kind with clients travelling from far and wide to avail of a standard of care almost unknown to that date.

On Noel's retirement in 2003 the reins were handed over to our senior veterinary surgeon Dr Alan Rossiter. Alan refurbished the practice at that time and fully re-equipped with the most modern of anaesthetic, surgical, dental, laboratory and diagnostic imaging equipment available.

Since then we have continued to invest in our facilities and since 2007 we are accredited by the Veterinary Council of Ireland as a "Veterinary Hospital". We were one of the first practices to achieve this standard, the highest accreditation achievable. We take great pride in continuing to offer the very best of veterinary care to all our patients and to this day we continue to have clients who travel from all over Leinster to visit us.

All our vets and nurses have their own pets they love. We would ever only want the very best for our own pets.

Our philosophy therefore is to treat all our pet-patients as if they were our own by availing of the most up-to-date advances in veterinary medicine. We will always offer you the gold-standard of care and never compromise on our advice but, where requested for financial or practical reasons, we will also offer varying options to allow you to make the final decision on what you wish to do for your pet.

Of course all our staff attend numerous continuing education courses to ensure we remain fully up to date with the wonderful advances in veterinary medicine so that we can continue to offer the standard of care befitting of Blacklion Pet Hospital's tradition and history as a centre of excellence.

There are times that we will recommend to refer your pet for specialist care - for example in the areas of:

  • orthopaedics
  • ophthalmology
  • neurology
  • internal medicine

To this end we maintain excellent relationships with specialist practices and will always offer referral at the earliest possible opportunity where we feel this is in the best interest of your pet.

Teaching Hospital

Blacklion Pet Hospital is one of the teaching practices of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine and also for the 5 training centres for Veterinary Nurses in Ireland.

This means that we have visiting veterinary and veterinary nursing students from time to time to observe and assist the practice staff.

Clients will always be asked if they consent to a student to be in attendance during their visit.

As well as fulfilling our obligation to train the next generation of veterinary professionals we believe that being involved in veterinary education enhances the quality of care we can provide to you.
