Alan, our senior vet, qualified from the UCD Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. Coming from an equine background in Co. Tipperary he initially entered practice with the aim of specialising in this area. However after a very short while working under the tutelage of Patrick Morrissey MVB MRCVS in the award-winning Riverside Veterinary Hospital in Dungarvan Co. Waterford, Alan realised that his true calling was in pet practice. Realising this he then dedicated his first years in practice to building up the expertise and experience needed to allow him to practice to the high standards required by today's pet owners.
After several years working in Ireland Alan traveled to New Zealand where he worked exclusively in small animal practice in Hamilton on the North Island and Christchurch on the South Island. In Christchurch Alan split his time between working in a referral ophthalmologist practice and the local emergency clinic - ER for pets!
On return to Ireland in 2001 he elected to work with the Irish and UK government veterinary services fighting the Food and Mouth Disease outbreak.
On return to Ireland in 2003 he succeeded Noel Kelly as the senior partner in Blacklion Pet Hospital and intends to remain so until retirement!
Alan is a past-President of VICAS (Veterinary Ireland Companion Animal Society), the representative body for small aninmal vets in Ireland. He is currently the Vice-President of Veterinary Ireland.
Clinically Alan has a special interest in orthopaedic surgery, dermatology and in particular canine ear infections. He also is a keen believer in promoting preventative health care for pets.
Alan is married to Anna and together they have four great boys - Mikey, Tom, Nicky and Peter. They also have a dog (Gussy) who was rescued as a baby puppy from a box outside the door of the practice.
